About
The Barbados Pharmaceutical Society
The Barbados Pharmaceutical Society (BPS), the national association of professional pharmacists, is one of the oldest organizations in Barbados. A non-profit organization, it was founded in 1948 with the primary objectives of raising the standard of education of pharmacists and projecting a positive image of pharmacy to the general public. Today, more than 50 years later, the BPS continues to view as a priority the continuous improvement of the professional knowledge and education of its members as a means of catering to the needs and expectations of the public. The Society's programs of continuing education are aimed at enabling pharmacists to effectively meet the challenges brought by the advent of new diseases, the introduction of new medicines and the use of new technologies in their area of health care. Objectives with regard to the public have expanded beyond the need to project a positive image of pharmacy, to include a commitment to working in harmony with the patient towards improved health care for all citizens. Strong public education campaigns have been, and continue to be, implemented with the ultimate goal of achieving effective patient care. Current programs focus on the importance of patient compliance with medical instructions to facilitate the proper use of medication. The programs also emphasize the role and responsibility of the patient, as a member of the health care team, to be well informed about their illnesses and methods of treatment, particularly with regard to medication. The Barbados Pharmaceutical Society is managed by a 10-member Executive Council, led by a President, which is elected to office annually. The organization currently has 117 individually registered members and holds membership status in various international organizations including the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists.
