A Career in Pharmacy

Today's pharmacist has evolved significantly from the bespectacled, somewhat grandfatherly type who dispensed medicaments and life advice from behind a counter, to an individual who is expected to be, and is, more involved in the delivery of health care to the general public.

Working along with doctors, other health care professionals and, of course, the patient, the pharmacist is a key member of the health care team. This expansion of the role of the pharmacist is matched by the extensive educational and training requirements that pharmacists must undergo in order to be able to practice.

In Barbados, the practice of Pharmacy is governed by the Pharmacy Act, and individuals wishing to carry on a practice in pharmacy must be registered in accordance with the provisions as set out in the Act. An annual registration fee of BDS $250.00 is due and payable on or before January 31 of each year, with late registration attracting a penalty of an additional $250.00.
